One of the foundational truths to becoming a strong, well grounded Christian is doing the Word. There are no short cuts to establishing our Christian lives on the Word of God just as there are no short cuts to strengthening our natural bodies, they both take action and hard work.
James 1:22-25 KJV tells us “But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the Word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
We are to be hearers of the Word but too often Christians stop there and think that just hearing will produce the results they seek from God's Word. We are deceiving ourselves if we think we can just hear the Word and believe we will walk victoriously in life. It is not enough to just hear the Word we must take the next step and put action to what we have heard.
The Apostle James put it this way in the very next chapter of James.
James 2:18 GNT (Good News Translation) “One person has faith, another has actions.” My answer is, “Show me how anyone can have faith without actions. I will show you my faith by my actions.”” Just as mixing fuel and air in a vehicle engine creates combustion which produces the power necessary to move a vehicle, when we hear the Word and join it with corresponding action, these two mixing together create a combustion of life in us that puts the Word of God into motion to move the circumstances of life we face.
In Matthew 7:23-27 the Lord gave us the parable of the wise and foolish men. In this parable one man heeded the instruction of the Word he heard and built his house on a foundation of rock so when the trials of life came, his house withstood every test and remained standing. The other only heard but did not act on the instruction of the Word he heard and built his house on a foundation of sand and when the same trials came, his house was not able to withstand the tests of life and fell to the ground. Both men heard the same Word but one acted upon what he heard and it produced the results he needed to be victorious, the other man did not.
Look at James 1:25 once again "those who look into the perfect law of liberty, and continue therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
I encourage you to put action to the Word of God and allow it to come alive all around you . Study the Word of God, allow the Holy Spirit to reveal what the Lord is speaking to you through his Word then take that revelation and do it, put action to it, walk in it, apply it in your daily life and watch yourself grow into a more powerful man and woman of God that will be a source of blessing and encouragement everywhere you go.
